For, curtains covering windows of minibuses and seven-seaters can also be a perfect way to hide illegal stuff.
The RTA has warned the vehicle rental offices not to use curtains in their vehicles. If this warning is ignored, the authority will fine the owner Dh500 and impound the vehicle up to one month.
According to sources, there have been cases when some of these vehicles were caught overloading or illegally carrying passengers with the curtains providing the shield.
At a recent meeting of representatives of car rental offices and the Commercial Transport Activities Department of the RTA, officials said using curtains covering the vehicle windows is an offence liable for fines
and penalties.
The authority has intensified inspections to prevent vehicles giving passengers lifts illegally. A fine of Dh5,000 awaits motorists who flout the rule.
“With curtains on, inspectors or anyone else cannot see what is going on inside. The same penalties are for tinting of window glasses above a certain level. The regulations are to ensure safety of the people too,” sources said.
Meanwhile, car rental companies said offences against their vehicles were being recorded in the system very late, which negatively impacted
their business.
“These gatherings will be held periodically on a quarterly basis with the strategic partners of the department to discuss all matters of common interest,” said Sultan Abdullah Al Marzooki, Director of Commercial Transport Activities Department.
The authorities assured that suggestions and complaints of car rental firms will be looked into.
