The days of good gas mileage being only for small, aerodynamic vehicles are behind us — the advent of the hybrid means any type of vehicle can be considerably more efficient than a combustion-only alternative, and that includes vehicles that seat seven occupants or more. With hybrids becoming more popular and more affordable every year, there is an ever-increasing pool of 7-seat hybrids vying for your attention and your money. So how do you decide which one to choose? Fortunately, we’re here to help.
Here are seven of the best 7-seat hybrids you can buy today, ranked by highest range. Note that these are standard hybrids rather than plug-in hybrids.
2023 Toyota Sienna in dark grey.
The 2023 Toyota Sienna is not only spacious, comfortable, and able to seat up to eight occupants across its three rows, it’s our Minivan Best Buy of 2023. All Sienna models are hybrids, capable of up to 36 mpg combined or 35 mpg combined when equipped with the optional all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Either way, you get an efficient, maneuverable, comfortable people-mover of unmatched value. See 2023 Toyota Sienna models for sale near you
Front view of the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander
An all-new model, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is an even larger, more spacious take on the standard Highlander, although it’s built on a different platform. The third row in the Grand Highlander is especially spacious, with room enough even for a person 6’4″ tall. It comes in two different hybrid versions (one is very powerful) and offers up to 36 mpg combined. See 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander models for sale near you
2023 Toyota Highlander in grey.
Despite the similar name, the 2023 Toyota Highlander doesn’t look much like the all-new Grand Highlander, and it’s based on different underpinnings, too. Still, the Highlander Hybrid is roomy with seating for up to eight occupants, as well as efficient, at up to 36 mpg combined. See 2023 Toyota Highlander models for sale near you
2023 Toyota Sequoia in green.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia brings its truck-based ruggedness and size into a new generation with standard hybrid power capable of 22 mpg combined in rear-drive form or 20 mpg when equipped with 4-wheel drive. The hybrid system generates an impressive 437 combined horsepower and 583 combined lb-ft of torque, enabling the Sequoia to tow up to 9,000 pounds as well as haul up to eight occupants in comfort. The 2023 Ford Explorer Hybrid seen from a front quarter angle
The 2023 Ford Explorer is a midsize 3-row SUV with seating for up to seven, available in a wide range of trims, with three powertrain options, including the hybrid. Good for up to 27 mpg combined with RWD, or 25 mpg combined with AWD. The Explorer’s hybrid drivetrain generates 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to tow up to 5,000 pounds. 2023 Volvo XC90 Recharge in grey.
While the top-tier 2023 Volvo XC90 Recharge is a plug-in hybrid with 36 miles of all-electric range and 455 combined horsepower, even the base XC90 comes with a mild-hybrid drivetrain good for 25 mpg combined. It’s also stylish, comfortable, and safe, with standard all-wheel drive, updated infotainment systems, and a reasonable, if not expansive third row. See 2023 Volvo XC90 models for sale near you
Front view of the new 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV three-row midsize SUV
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is also an all-new model, wearing sleek style over its 3-row body and mild-hybrid drivetrain. Despite scoring a relatively modest 25 mpg combined, the CX-90’s combination of style, premium materials, and features make it an appealing option in the midsize 7-seat hybrid space. Even though it has a relatively compact exterior, the new CX-90 can seat up to eight occupants. The CX-90 is also available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). See 2024 Mazda CX-90 models for sale near you
2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid in silver.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 gets a range of design and equipment updates, but it also gets a new standard powertrain, adding mild-hybrid functionality to its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Despite the GLB’s subcompact dimensions, it does have a third row, with seating for up to seven. That third row is tight but fine for occasional use or for smaller kids. The 2023 Kia Sorento Hybrid in Runway Red
Technically a 3-row midsize SUV, the 2023 Kia Sorento Hybrid only seats a maximum of six occupants thanks to its standard second-row captain’s chairs. The missing seat does open up the cabin for easier access to the third row, however, so it’s worth considering if you don’t need the full seven seats offered in the standard Sorento. The Sorento Hybrid gets 37 mpg combined, making it the most efficient non-PHEV hybrid 3-row SUV available. See 2023 Kia Sorento Hybrid models for sale near you
2024 Lexus TX 500h F Sport in grey.
Sharing some of its architecture with the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander, the 2024 Lexus TX will be a 3-row luxury midsize SUV with a range of powertrains, including one hybrid, one plug-in hybrid, and a turbocharged 4-cylinder in the base model. The TX 500h F Sport is the hybrid model, boasting 366 horsepower and 409 pound-feet of torque alongside an expected 24 mpg combined.
Front view of the 2024 Lexus GX
Another midsize luxury 3-row SUV coming from Lexus is the 2024 GX, with a twin-turbocharged V6 model as the standard entry, and a new hybrid model joining the GX range. The 2024 GX is the first all-new GX in more than two decades, with a forward-leaning exterior design and a tech-centric, high-style cabin, as well as a full-time 4WD system and three rows of seating for up to seven.
